Braintree cannot be connected to Squarespace Commerce. Squarespace's Payments settings offer only Squarespace Payments, Stripe and PayPal for online checkout (Square for in-person point of sale), and its help center states the Commerce API cannot be used to connect a third-party processor. Braintree's own partner and plugin pages do not list Squarespace either. A merchant on Squarespace who wants PayPal wallet payments connects a PayPal Business account directly, which is PayPal's own integration and not a Braintree gateway; a merchant who needs Braintree specifically has to run the store on a platform that supports it.1
UAT-Ops testing: Braintree's sandbox was tested by UAT-Ops on 2026-09-11 with the directory's card flow (7 passed, 1 expected rejection) → evidence on the Braintree hub. The Squarespace integration itself has not been run.

PayPal on Squarespace is not Braintree
Squarespace's PayPal option is a direct PayPal Business account connection made from the Payments panel. It accepts PayPal and Venmo wallets only: shoppers must log into a personal PayPal account, there is no card entry, no recurring or installment billing, a 10,000 USD per-transaction ceiling and a 180-day refund window. Nothing in it uses Braintree merchant credentials, so a Braintree vault, plan or webhook setup gives you nothing here.

The API is a closed door too
Do not plan to bolt Braintree on through the Commerce API. Squarespace's API-keys article says outright that the API cannot connect a third-party processor, and Create Order only imports orders already paid elsewhere. The Transactions API reports the gateway as one of four fixed values, none of which is Braintree. A checkout served from your own Braintree-backed domain with orders pushed back is an off-platform store, not a Squarespace integration.

Braintree's own partner links will not help
Braintree's shopping-cart help entry names no platforms; it links to a braintreepayments.com integrations page that now 301-redirects to a PayPal marketing page featuring WooCommerce, BigCommerce and Shopware. The enterprise plugin reference lists SAP, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, NetSuite and IBM. Squarespace is on neither, so do not read a stale search snippet as evidence of a plugin.

Moving a Braintree vault means moving platforms
If Squarespace is fixed and Braintree is the thing you leave, the vault does not come with you. Braintree exports only after a PCI attestation for the receiving gateway, encrypts the file to that gateway's public key, and allows two exports in total. Subscriptions and transaction history never migrate, and Apple Pay and Google Pay methods are dropped because their network tokens are non-transferable. Squarespace has no import target for vaulted cards anyway.

Squarespace's fee stacks on whichever processor you settle for
Choosing PayPal or Stripe instead of Braintree does not remove Squarespace's own cut. Which rate applies depends on the plan family: 2% on Basic (the current family, on sale since February 2026) or 3% on Business (the previous-generation plan existing customers keep), on top of the processor's rate, dropping to 0% on Commerce Basic, Commerce Advanced, Core, Plus and Advanced. On a refund PayPal keeps its processing fee while Squarespace returns its share pro rata, and refunds must be issued from the Orders panel or the two sides disagree.
