In person only. Squarespace supports Square as a point-of-sale processor, run from the Squarespace mobile app with a Square Reader, US-only. It cannot process online checkout: for web checkout, Squarespace allows only Squarespace Payments, Stripe or PayPal, and Square cannot be connected alongside Squarespace Payments.1

Capability status reflects the integration and documentation available at the time of verification, not necessarily every capability of the underlying gateway or platform.
There is no Square Sandbox path into Squarespace: the connection signs in with a live Square account from the Squarespace app, and Squarespace's test mode covers only Squarespace Payments and Stripe online checkout. To validate the POS flow, make a small real in-person sale on a supported Square Reader and refund it from the Orders tab, then assert the order appears in the Orders panel, inventory decrements and is restored on refund, and the payment shows in the Square Dashboard. Squarespace's Transactions API reports orders and donations with paymentGatewayName SQUARE, but its docs do not say POS sales are included, so confirm against a real sale before relying on it for reconciliation.2

On Squarespace, Square only takes in-person payments through the Squarespace mobile app: Square Reader, Tap to Pay and cash. It never appears at web checkout, which is limited to Squarespace Payments, Stripe or PayPal, and the Commerce API cannot add another processor. A merchant who wants one Square account for web and shop counter has to accept two processors and two payout streams, or leave Squarespace.

Squarespace's compatibility chart pairs Squarespace Payments only with PayPal, while Stripe may sit beside Square. So a store that wants Square at the counter must run online checkout on Stripe (or PayPal), not Squarespace Payments. This matters when Squarespace nudges merchants toward its native product: moving the web side to Squarespace Payments means giving up Square for point of sale, and Tap to Pay on Squarespace Payments becomes the in-person option.

The fees article says Square works for point of sale in the iOS Squarespace app only. The Square Reader article, updated July 2026, lists iOS 1.48.0 or later and Android 1.69.0 or later. Treat the newer Reader article as current, but test on the actual device before a merchant buys hardware. Only Square Reader models work; Square Register, Stand and Terminal do not.
